PRP / PRF Treatments in Oakville, ON

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) are regenerative aesthetic treatments that use components from your own blood to support skin quality, under-eye rejuvenation, acne scar improvement, and healthier-looking hair density in appropriate candidates.
At Distinct Medical Aesthetics in Oakville, your provider will assess your concerns, skin quality, medical history, and treatment goals before recommending PRP, PRF, or a combination treatment plan. These treatments are often chosen by patients who want a natural-looking approach that works with the body’s own repair processes rather than adding synthetic volume.

What Is PRP/PRF?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. A small sample of your blood is drawn and processed to separate a platelet-rich portion of plasma. This concentrate contains platelets and growth factors that are used in aesthetic medicine to support collagen production, tissue repair, and skin rejuvenation.
PRF stands for platelet-rich fibrin. PRF is another form of platelet concentrate, often described as a next-generation option because it contains a fibrin matrix that can allow a slower release of growth factors over time. Depending on the treatment area and desired outcome, your provider may recommend PRP, PRF, or both.
Both treatments are autologous, meaning they come from your own body. Because every patient is different, results vary, and a personalized treatment plan is important.

What Can PRP/PRF Help Improve?

PRP/PRF treatments may be recommended for patients who want to improve the appearance of:
  • Dull or tired-looking skin
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Fine lines and crepey skin
  • Under-eye hollowing, thin skin, or dark shadows related to skin quality
  • Atrophic or depressed acne scars
  • Overall skin firmness and radiance
  • Hair thinning or reduced hair density in appropriate candidates
PRP/PRF can also be paired with treatments such as microneedling or laser resurfacing when a more comprehensive skin-rejuvenation plan is appropriate.

PRP/PRF Treatment Options

PRP/PRF Skin Rejuvenation

PRP/PRF skin rejuvenation can help refresh the skin's appearance by supporting the body’s natural repair response. This option may be recommended for patients concerned with fine lines, texture changes, dullness, early laxity, or overall skin quality.
Depending on your plan, PRP/PRF may be injected into targeted areas or used alongside procedures such as microneedling to support collagen remodelling and skin renewal.

Under-Eye PRF

The under-eye area is delicate and often shows early signs of aging, fatigue, thinning of the skin, and changes in texture. PRF may be recommended for patients with mild under-eye hollowing, crepey texture, or dark circles related to skin quality.
Under-eye PRF is not the same as dermal filler. It is not designed to create immediate volume correction in the way filler can. Instead, it works gradually and is often chosen by patients who want a subtle, regenerative option for the under-eye area. Patients with significant under-eye bags, pronounced fat pads, or more advanced hollowing may need a different treatment recommendation.

PRP/PRF for Acne Scars

PRP/PRF may be used as part of a customized acne scar treatment plan, especially for atrophic or depressed scars. Acne scars often require a combination approach, and your provider may recommend PRP/PRF with microneedling, laser resurfacing, subcision, or other scar-focused treatments depending on the scar type, depth, skin tone, and active acne status.
The goal is improvement in the appearance of scars and overall skin quality. Acne scar revision is a process, and a series of treatments may be recommended.

PRP Hair Restoration

PRP can be used on the scalp to support healthier-looking hair density in suitable candidates. It is commonly considered for early hair thinning or shedding patterns, where the hair follicles are still active.
The current treatment guidance recommends a starting series of three treatments spaced about one month apart, with maintenance treatments twice yearly when appropriate. Your provider will confirm the best schedule based on your hair-loss pattern, medical history, and response to treatment.

What Happens During a PRP/PRF Treatment?

Your appointment begins with a consultation and treatment plan. If PRP/PRF is appropriate, a small amount of blood is drawn and processed in the clinic to separate the platelet-rich portion needed for treatment.
The prepared PRP/PRF is then applied or injected into the targeted area. For skin rejuvenation, it may be used on areas such as the face, neck, under the eyes, or acne scars. For hair restoration, it is injected into targeted areas of the scalp.
Treatment time can vary depending on the area being treated and whether PRP/PRF is being combined with another procedure. Your provider will review what to expect before, during, and after your appointment.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Most patients need a series of treatments to support a stronger outcome. For skin and under-eye rejuvenation, a series of three to five treatments may be recommended, often spaced several weeks apart. For hair restoration, the current recommendation is three initial treatments spaced about 1 month apart, followed by maintenance, if appropriate.
Your treatment schedule will depend on your concern, treatment area, skin quality, hair-loss pattern, and goals. Results develop gradually, and maintenance may be recommended to help support the outcome.

When Will I See Results?

PRP/PRF treatments work gradually. Some patients notice early improvement in skin glow or texture within a few weeks, while collagen-related changes and hair-density changes take longer to develop.
For skin rejuvenation and acne scars, improvements typically build over a series as the skin’s repair process continues. For hair restoration, changes are usually assessed over several months because hair growth cycles take time. Results vary from person to person.

Is There Downtime?

Downtime depends on the treatment area and whether PRP/PRF is combined with another procedure. You may experience temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, pinpoint bleeding, or mild sensitivity after treatment.
For scalp PRP, tenderness or mild swelling can occur after injections. For under-eye PRF, bruising and swelling are possible because the area is delicate. Your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions based on the treatment performed.

Preparing for Treatment

Before your appointment, follow the pre-care instructions provided by Distinct Medical Aesthetics. Let your provider know about your medical history, medications, supplements, allergies, recent procedures, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, active infections, and any history of blood or platelet disorders.
Do not stop prescribed medication unless your prescribing clinician has told you it is safe to do so. Your provider may recommend avoiding alcohol, unnecessary anti-inflammatory medication, and certain supplements before treatment when appropriate for you.

Aftercare

After PRP/PRF, keep the treated area clean and follow your provider’s instructions. You may be asked to avoid makeup, strenuous exercise, heat exposure, saunas, swimming, exfoliating products, retinoids, or active skincare for a short period after treatment.
Sun protection is important after skin treatments. If PRP/PRF is combined with microneedling or laser, your aftercare plan may be more detailed because the skin barrier has been intentionally stimulated.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for PRP/PRF if you are looking for a natural-looking regenerative treatment and have realistic expectations about gradual improvement. These treatments may be suitable for patients concerned with early skin aging, texture, under-eye skin quality, acne scars, or hair thinning.
PRP/PRF may not be right for everyone. A consultation is important if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active infection, have certain blood or platelet conditions, are taking medications that affect clotting, have a history of keloid scarring, or have a medical condition that may affect healing.
